  1. Hmm. Was thinking for a long term thing we could have a sort of.. planned calendar for them? I assume its quite multicultural over there so maybe we could find out what celebrated festivals there are amongst the largest racial groups there and we could maybe plan activities that the DTE-NH staff could facilitate: perhaps during Chinese New Year, they could have lion dance and decorations; during christmas and hanukkah they could have trees and stuff or tree-decorating competition at the lawn and whatever else.
Basically ways the community could share their culture with others and there are tons of festivals, considering the diversity – so probably one for each month! We would need to research on the racial/religious groups there, the type of celebrations they do, what do they do during those celebrations and work with activities around that, that sorta thing. Hmmm. and if there’s nothing on a particular month, we could just do something like movie night or potluck night where people contribute food or pay like $5 to eat and the kids could have like a little table or something… something social?
    Just a thought!

  2. Great idea about planning something of this nature – I believe that many groups in the neighbourhood have similar things going on throughout the year, so maybe we could find some way to bring the groups together?

On the ‘long-term’ note – Mel and I met with the director of the WISH Society (http://www.wish-vancouver.net/) on Friday and they’ve asked us to help them with some research/report writing.

They have a van that goes out every evening to the places where the women work to give out condoms, needles, warm drinks etc (basically a harm reduction initiative) and the pilot project (which has been a success) does not have long term funding.

So they would like us to research the benefits of having this harm reduction initiative so that they can use our findings to gain long term funding.
We also discussed possibly meeting with some women who want to tell us about the van and perhaps the van operators…

How does that sound to everyone?

    Nadia

  3. Sure, why not! So the research of the benefits is the report, not the planning of what they can do?

  4. Right, they’ve had the van program for a few years now. So they’ve already done the planning, implementing, evaluation – now they need the long term funding to keep it going.

    Does that answer your question?

  5. I just found out about your program, however, when I rang the DTES N House I was told that this is for last year, Are you planning to have any group starting 0n 2009. Or, is aware of any program in the area that’s going on now?
